Studio Residency Opportunity for Seamstress / Tailor / Alterationist

ALTERED Sewing Studio – The Junction, Toronto

May 2026 | 8–12 months

ALTERED is an established sewing and alteration studio in Toronto’s Junction neighbourhood. I’m the owner and operator, and beginning May 2026 I’ll be stepping away on maternity leave. During that time, I’m offering a studio residency to an experienced sewer who would like to work out of a fully equipped space while also carrying on the ALTERED alteration practice.

This residency is designed for someone who works independently and would appreciate both a dedicated studio and an existing community presence. The resident would have the freedom to shape their own work while keeping the studio active and welcoming throughout my leave.

The residency includes

  • Full use of a well-equipped sewing and alteration studio

  • Access to industrial machines, tools, and studio essentials

  • An established location with regular foot traffic

  • The opportunity to operate ALTERED during the residency period

  • Flexibility to take on personal clients, commissions, or creative projects

Resident responsibilities

  • Running the day-to-day operation of the studio during the residency

  • Providing alteration services under the ALTERED name

  • Covering rent ($1648 + HST) and utilities, for the duration of the residency

  • General care of the studio space and equipment

This residency may be a good fit if you

  • Are an experienced seamstress, tailor, or alterationist

  • Currently freelance or run your own small practice

  • Are comfortable working solo and managing clients

  • Value working in a neighbourhood-based, independent studio setting

Timing

  • Start: May 2026

  • Length: Minimum 8 months, with the option to extend up to 12 months with potential to stay on afterwards.

If this sounds like a good fit, please get in touch vie email to emaan@alteredto.ca with a short introduction about yourself, your sewing background, and what you’re hoping to work on during the residency. Please provide your resume, and links to a portfolio, website, or Instagram.
